MEDICAL ADVICE

Sex is safe for a healthy, normal pregnancy.

You will be advised to refrain from sex only if you are having a difficult pregnancy, vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, vaginal discharge or significant complications. Talk to your doctor to make sure what applies to your case.

It is also important to know the chance of becoming infected with sexually transmitted diseases during pregnancy, which may prove dangerous to you and your baby. Use of a condom may help you reduce such risk.

For example, if you have placenta previa (a condition in which the placenta is down so low, next to or in a position where it covers the cervix), sexual intercourse may cause serious bleeding.

Also if you have a history of pre-term labor or threat of miscarriage, you doctor may advise you to refrain from sexual intercourse during pregnancy.
